LIVE – Israel must be pressured into second phase of Gaza truce: Hamas

Tahani Mustafa, an expert on Israel-Palestine with International Crisis Group, has told Al Jazeera that it is important to “be cautious” when exercising any optimism over phase two of the ceasefire deal.

She said Israeli politicians have made it “very clear that they’re not interested in a phase two”, adding that the Israeli public is also “not really interested in seeing a permanent cessation of hostilities”.

Despite the fact that "we’ve seen over 400 Israeli violations of what had been agreed upon, at least in phase one," Mustafa stated that Hamas desires a cessation of hostilities. “Yet, I think we have to expect that there are going to be limitations in terms of what Hamas could put up with”, she said, adding, “it’s very clear that Israel is still trying to find any excuse to continue its current onslaught”.

She said that Israel is trying to “build a case in order to either derail negotiations to phase two or indefinitely postpone them”.

In the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, Hamas calls for mobilization against Israeli restrictions. Senior Hamas member Abdul Rahman Shadid has called for “a large mobilisation” in the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound during the holy month of Ramadan, and to break the Israeli restrictions in the occupied East Jerusalem.

“We must not surrender to the expected restrictions of the occupation, and we must confront them with all our strength and adhere to our historical and religious right to the blessed mosque,” he said in a statement published on the group’s Telegram channel.

He stressed the need to “invest the opportunity of the month of Ramadan in protecting Al-Aqsa with roaring crowds, and decorating its courtyard with worshipers and guards”.

Israel wants to extend phase one of Gaza ceasefire deal by over 6 weeks

Al Jazeera is reporting from Jordan because it has been banned in Israel and the occupied West Bank.

Israel is not only trying to delay talks on phase two, but trying not commit to it altogether.

We are hearing reports that they are trying to extend phase one of the ceasefire agreement by upwards of six weeks, meaning another 42 days in order to secure the release of more Israeli hostages from Gaza.

Israel wants the extension without promising a withdrawal of Israeli troops or an end to Israeli aggression on Palestinian land. Naturally, Hamas has stated that they are prepared to demonstrate flexibility for phase two and release all remaining Israeli hostages in one large batch on the first day of that phase. This is something that is non-negotiable for Hamas. Click here to share on social media

As phase one comes to an end, Gazan Palestinians are worried. Hani Muhammad Hani Muhammad From Gaza City, reporting What has inspired hope this morning for many Palestinians is the arrival of the US peace envoy to Cairo.  Later, they were joined by the Israeli and Qatari delegations to start negotiations for the second phase of the ceasefire.

Phase one is coming to an end one day from now. Phase two negotiations ought to have begun on February 16. That did not happen because of the Israeli Prime Minister’s repeated delays of negotiations.

This hope that was inspired this morning has started to fade away in the past hours, with Israel’s intentions to extend phase one, which highlights the the manoeuvers by the Israeli prime minister to avoid full commitment to the end of war, and the withdrawal of the Israeli military, crucial elements of phase two.

A week from tomorrow, Israel is supposed to withdraw from the Philadelphi Corridor, as well as the Israeli military from other parts of the Gaza, including the buffer zone.  Now, if that does not occur, we might see a return to war, which is what people are most afraid of right now.  Yesterday (13:01 GMT) Qatar asks Israel to let UNRWA and other international organizations work. Qatar has submitted a written memorandum to the Hague-based International Court of Justice (ICJ), emphasising Israel’s obligation to allow the UN and other international organisations to operate in Israel and the occupied Palestinian territory.

The memorandum seeks clarification on Israel’s responsibilities on the presence and activities of UN agencies, particularly the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA), as well as other international organisations and third states.

The memorandum also stressed “the necessity of respecting and protecting UN and international organisation properties, including schools, medical facilities, transportation, and water infrastructure”.

It further underscored “the need to safeguard humanitarian and medical personnel working in these areas” as well as “the delivery of humanitarian aid”.

In October of last year, the Israeli parliament passed two laws that said the UNRWA should stop working in Israel and in occupied Palestinian territory and that Israeli authorities should not talk to the UNRWA. The laws came into effect on January 30.

Israel also prevents much of the humanitarian aid from being delivered to Gaza, including temporary shelters and heavy machinery.

Israel must ‘better protect civilians’ in occupied West Bank: Germany

Israel must “better protect civilians and civilian infrastructure” in its military operations in the northern West Bank, according to the German Federal Foreign Office.

It called for the 40,000 people displaced by Israel’s “Iron Wall” operation to be “allowed back to their homes as soon as possible”.

“The Israeli government’s plans to deploy the Israeli army in the Jenin refugee camp on a long-term basis are unacceptable,” the ministry added.
